Fighting Big Infrastructure Projects: Indigenous communities in Southern Mexico oppose the 'Interoceanic Corridor' – Speaker and Film
Tuesday 21 February 2023, 07:00pm
An entire region in the Mexican state of Oaxaca is under threat from a massive infrastructure project called 'the Interoceanic Corridor'. It is meant to run across the country, through communities, indigenous territory and precious biospheres, to connect the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean. Big companies supported by the Mexican government want to build or expand roads, a high-speed railway, a pipeline, container, gas and petrochemical terminals in ports on both sides, and a range of other infrastructures, including 'special economic zones' with factories where laborers have none or limited rights. The new infrastructure is meant to shorten the time it takes to bring goods through the Panama canal. Many of those who live on and with the land which will be crossed by these massive constructions, recognize that there lives will be completely
altered, and that nature will be destroyed.

One of the groups opposing this mega-project is ‘Maderas del Pueblo’. A member of this group will be in Liverpool to speak about his people’s struggles, and about the alternatives for ‘development’ that indigenous communities have come up with.

Come to hear him speak at Liverpool Social Centre ‘Next to Nowhere’, 96 Bold Street, Tuesday 21st February, 7pm. The talk will be followed by questions and discussion.
Afterwards folks are welcome to stay for the documentary ‘Powerlands’ at 8.30pm

Documentary directed by Ivey Camille Manybeads Tso
