Solidarity, Community Building and Music in Nueva Esperanza, El Salvador

(ONLINE EVENT)

30 years ago, a group of refugees from the civil war in El Savador returned to the war-torn country to start a community of their own. They called it Nueva Esperanza, New Hope. The community is run through assemblies, councils and cooperatives, which minimal ties to the State. From the very start, Nueva Esperanza had strong ties to groups and individuals in the UK. They fundraised for the training of local educators, schools, nurseries, and organized solidarity visits from the UK. They also started the project Music for Hope, to strengthen the involvement of young people and to sustain community cohesion.

In this event we hear from community organizers about the government forms in the community and about women’s groups, from those who have maintained long-term solidarity projects with a mostly self-governed community, and from the founder of Music for Hope.
